OCA president calls for support for Beijing Games

BEIJING, (Xinhua) — President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahd Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on Sunday called on all OCA members to support China for the successful delivery of the 2008 Olympic Games.

“It is important for Asian countries to stand behind China … as the success of the Beijing Olympics is the success of Asia,” Sheikh Ahmad told Xinhua on the sidelines of the general assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), which will open in Beijing on Monday.

Sheikh Ahmad also said that the Olympic Games should not be politicalized.

“Sport is sport, politics is politics. My idea is don’t bring politics to sport… They should not use sport as a tool,” he said.

With less than 130 days to go before the Beijing Olympics open, the air quality in the Chinese capital remains a concern. But Sheikh Ahmad said that no Olympic Games is perfect and what matters is whether the hosts try their utmost to solve problems.

“Almost every games had some problems. It’s normal,” said Sheikh Ahmad. “Also, the environment is a global problem…I believe the Chinese organizers are working very hard to create a better environment for the games.”

Sheikh Ahmad also said that he is confident the Beijing Games will be best ever.

“I am sure Beijing 2008 will be the best games because Beijing has worked for the games for more than a decade,” he said.

Beijing was defeated by Sydney in the bid for 2000 Olympics before it won the right to host the 2008 Games.
